A Plea Against Standardisation

Some remarks of Gotthard de Beauclair freely translated from the German. Text from a speech by de Beauclair to accompany an exhibition of his work in 1961, entitled ‘Modern German Book Design’. This is reprinted along with an editorial note from the Monotype News Letter of December 1961 and printer’s preamble and note on Jan Tschichold’s Sabon typeface.

Hand-set in rare Sabon 14 Didot foundry type, with 48 Didot and 20 Didot italic. Other texts in a special casting of Monotype Sabon 10 Didot on a 12 point body with specially driven matrices for descending letters. Printed in black and blue throughout.

Zerkall papers with Fabriano Ingres and machine assisted blue marble wrappers over card covers with tipped on label. 285mm x 200mm. Hand-sewn in the workshop.
